14 Things You Need in Your Mobile Phone Repair Kit

Facing a broken screen is a stressful experience. We’ve all been there. If your phone is in similar condition, you could try to repair it. But before you start, make sure that you’ve prepared everything you need.

That includes all the replacement parts and all the tools.

Keep reading to learn about the necessary repair tools you should have in your mobile phone repair kit.

1. Screwdriver

First thing’s first, you need a high-quality set of screwdrivers. While you’ll find many manufacturers using common screw types, you’ll also find those with unique screws.

It’s a good idea to get a set that includes all the tools you might need. For example, if you’re repairing an iPhone, a pentalobe screwdriver is a must.

Get a screwdriver that has a rotating cap. You can remove screws without breaking pressure between your screwdriver and the screw.

Don’t forget to use a magnetic screwdriver. It’ll be more than helpful with all the tiny parts and screws.

2. Hairdryer or a Heat Gun

Newer phone models are glued together with powerful adhesives. Using any kind of pry tool will break the screen unless you follow the right steps. Instead, take a hairdryer or a heat gun and use it on your smartphone.

The increased temperature will weaken the adhesive, making it easier to remove the screen from your mobile phone. You can then use the pry tool to separate the screen from the body of your phone.

3. Magnetic Mat

All electronic devices have a lot of small parts, and mobile phones are no different. They have an immense number of small metal plates and even smaller screws.

That’s why having a magnetic mat is the perfect solution. Use it to keep all the parts in one place. No matter what happens, you know they’ll stay where you’ve put them.

4. Pry Opening Tool

A pry opening tool, also known as a guitar pick, is convenient for separating the screen from your phone’s body.

You can also use them as spacers. That’s practical in cases when you want to keep your screen apart from the body while you are working on something else.

5. Magnifying Glass

You want to be able to see all the tiny parts. A magnifying glass will help with that.

6. Glue Gun

Once you finish the repair, you’ll need to place everything back together. You can quickly put all the parts and screws back in their place, but you’ll need to find a way to reapply the adhesive.

That’s where a glue gun can be quite handy.

However, it’s important to mention that a glue gun is not always necessary. If the original adhesive is still in place, or you have a double-sided adhesive, you can finish your repair without one.

7. Suction Cup or Pliers

Using only the pry tool to separate the screen from the phone’s body can be challenging. Luckily, a suction cup makes it easy.

Apply a bit of pressure to the screen so the cup sticks. Then gently pull to separate the screen.

If you are planning to repair mobile phones regularly, then we’d recommend getting suction pliers.

8. Spudger Tool

The spudger tool is very similar to the guitar pick, but it’s a stick. It’s handy when you’re separating the screen from the phone body. Combine it with suction pliers to make the whole process smooth.

9. Desk Lamp

Given how small all the parts are, you’ll need the extra light from a desk lamp. If you don’t have it, get one as it will prove to be quite helpful.

10. Tweezers

Get a pair of precision tweezers and keep them in your toolbox. They’ll be useful in situations when a tiny screw falls in a small space. While turning the surface upside down can often help, it is not always the most optimal solution.

A thing to keep in mind, when you are getting precision tweezers, go with the non-magnetic ones.

11. Battery Pry Tool

Mobile phone batteries are very tricky, and repairing them requires utmost care. A gentle stab is enough to cause a small explosion. If you’re planning to remove the battery, get a battery pry tool.

Its unique design makes it the perfect companion for separating the battery from the rest of the internals.

12. Plastic Cards

While it’s not one of the must-have tools, plastic cards such as old credit cards can be an excellent replacement for a pry open tool.

With their broader width and length, plastic cards might be easier to use.

On the other hand, we suggest you use them carefully, as they might break.

13. Anti-Static Mat

Mobile phones are fragile pieces of technology. Even the smallest static can fry a particular part. Therefore, get an anti-static mat and repair your phone on it.

14. The Internet

The internet is a perfect tool that can help you greatly in the whole process. No matter which device you are using, it is highly likely that there’s a guide on disassembling it.

The Most Important Tool is Your Patience

Keep in mind that you’re going to repair a small device with numerous tiny parts. Working in these challenging conditions will require a lot of patience on your side. Therefore, make sure that you arm yourself with a lot of it.

Things to Keep in Mind

Before you begin your repair, keep a couple of things in mind.

First, upon opening your device, you are voiding its warranty. If you want to save it, you should visit an official phone repair service shop.

Second, your chance of fixing a mobile device depends on the severity of the damage. For example, a water spill is something that a professional should examine. They have many tools that help them locate a fried chip or other similar malfunctions.

Third, remember to take photos of your phone as you disassemble it. Place a strong focus on the location of the screws. That’ll make it easier for you to put back all the small parts together.

With that in mind, think twice before opening up your mobile phone.
